The Principles of Forest School
Regular Sessions
Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, ideally in a woodland setting. This allows both the learner and the leader to observe and develop as they work together.
Holistic Development
Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved. This helps to develop resilient, independent, confident and creative learners.
Woodland
Forest School takes place in woodland or a natural wooded environment. This allows the learner to develop their relationship with the natural world.
Supported Risk
Forest School promotes supported risk taking, appropriate to the environment and to themselves. Building on an individual’s motivation and their positive attitude helps with this.
Community
Forest School uses a range of learner centred processes to create a community for development and learning. This pedagogy is modelled through careful programme planning and relationship building. Play and choice are used as integral tools in this process.
